Windows 7: How to display .chm content

When you open a .chm file, you are in front of a Navigation to the webpage was canceled

First time, I was thinking that .chm was corrupted. It is not the case. In fact, there is a protection on files coming from other computers. You just have to open file properties and click on Unblock button.

After this, it works… Quite easy but sometimes it can be disturbing.

Unfortunately, this only works for CHM files on your local drives. When opening a file from a network share or mapped drive, the issue remains the same. But still thanks for the push in the right direction.

If you still find that you cannot see any content in the right pane of the Help viewer, ensure the filename of your file has no hash/sharp symbol in it.  There is a known issue with all versions of Windows regarding this bug.  This SOB caused me no end of headaches until I finally tried renaming my files many times and finding the hash was the problem.

Here's the official report from Micro$oft on the matter:

I found another great site for fixing all manner of CHM issues.  Please take a look here, as it includes every fix that I found on multiple sites, including the hash problem, all in one single location:

There is a command line tool from Sysinternal (www.sysinternals.com which redirects to technet) called streams.

With this you can unblock the files.

streams "C:\YOURPATH\*.*" to list all blocked files

streams -d "C:\YOURPATH\*.*" to remove block

Please note that downloading a file is adding information in an alternate NTFS stream. Other processes might do as well (althouhg I never had one)

I get that same error message when I open a .chm file on my computer (whether I created it or someone else did), but when I open Properties, the Security section at the bottom (including the "Unblock" button) does not appear. Any advice? I followed the link that Geekoid shared, but none of those works for me.

I had similar problem in windows7. I was getting the "Open File - Security Warning" error message box. When I click "Open" the content of the .chm file was blank. After I few trials I found out that unchecking the "Always ask before opening this file" check box resolved the issue.

Thanks
